Do I really need therapy?
Therapists can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.
Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?
Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and psychotherapist. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the therapist’s office. Every therapist should provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can expect that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone - with the exception of reports of suicide, homicide, or reports of elder and child abuse. This will be reported to the proper authorities as your therapist is a mandated reported. Sometimes, however, you may want your therapist to share information or give an update to someone on your healthcare team (your Physician, Naturopath, Attorney), but by law your therapist cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission.
Can I Do Therapy Online?
Yes, you can do therapy online. It’s often just as effective as in-person and more accessible. Here at The Cozy Counsel we offer online therapy services for clients located anywhere in Illinois.
How Should I Prepare for My First Session?
It can be comforting to know what to expect during your first therapy session, and asking your therapist about their plan can be a great place to start.
Other ways to prepare include:
Make sure you are in a safe place, dress comfortable but appropriate and not driving for your safety.
Be in a place where your confidentiality is protected
Keeping an open mind about therapy, and being open to the possibility that it can help you
writing down specific topics and issues you want to cover - it can be easy to draw a blank if you’re a bit nervous during your first session!
Being prepared to speak your mind about what’s bothering you - your needs, thoughts, and opinions are just as important as your therapist’s.
How Do I Keep Making Progress in Therapy?
Therapy is a big investment of your time, energy, and money - so you want to make sure you are invested.
You can continue to make good progress in therapy by:
Keeping up with any homework your therapist assigns.
Maintaining the momentum with consistent therapy sessions,
Being open and truthful about the issues and challenges you’re facing.
